World Water Day is celebrated every 22 March and this year's focus is on the "value of groundwater and making the invisible visible".
With this year's World Water Day, the UN is calling for the study, protection and sustainable use of groundwater in order to survive climate change and to meet the needs of a growing population. More than 40 percent of the world's population is affected by water scarcity. This means that three out of ten people lack access to safe drinking water and six out of ten people lack access to safe sanitation facilities.
This celebration also aims to raise awareness of the global water crisis and the need to seek measures to address it so that we reach the Millennium Development Goals. Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.
So this is a good day to remember that investment in efficient water management solutions is not just necessary, it is mandatory. The road to sustainability has a fundamental pillar in the treatment of our water. The management, monitoring and control of our societies' water systems is essential to be able to take measures in advance and mitigate the imminent effects of climate change.
