COOLBOT: Research on automation of frozen storage with the integration of AGVs and Machine Vision

Through the Project COOLBOTWe are committed to digitalisation and the application of new technological solutions to collaborate with the promotion and support of Innovative Business Groups (AEI) for the improving the competitiveness of SMEs. In collaboration with Clúster Food I+i and Umibots Robotic SolutionsIn the course of the project, we have carried out a nine-month project that will proposes the research and development of an autonomous robot capable of transporting and stacking pallets of product inside a freezer chamber (at a temperature of -30ºC), facilitating and automating the logistical processes of food industries that operate with frozen products.

Project data

  • Call for applications: Support programme for Business and Innovation Clusters (BICs) 2022b.
  • Duration: 9 months (July 2022 - April 2023).
  • Project budget: 202,685 euros.
  • Grant awarded: 162,146 euros.

Aim of the COOLBOT project

The food industries that deal with frozen products have difficulties in automating their logistical processes. Currently, there are no automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that can operate robustly in frozen chambers.

The COOLBOT project involves the research and development of an autonomous robot capable of transporting and stacking pallets of product inside a freezer chamber (at a temperature of -30ºC). Research will also be carried out on the integration into the robotic system of a software application for the management of the freezer warehouse, which will use an artificial vision system for the correct identification and location of the materials in the optimum locations to guarantee the greatest efficiency in their movements.
